On Longing by Susan Stewart


"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."


This picture was taken wile laying with my cat, only three days after I had adopted him. Looking back at this picture, it makes me think about how small he was. But I only know of his smaller proportions because my hand is next to his face in the picture. If my hand was not next to his face, the picture would not represent Vader as a kitten. It could represent him at any time in his life, just because there is no reference to scale.

Any time that I go grocery shopping is at 3 o'clock in the morning in my local Wal-Mart. During these trips, I almost always ride in the shopping cart and let whoever is with me push me around. This is the best part of any time that I go to the store. The cart (aka the capacity) is the experience that I long for the most when going grocery shopping.

 "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body." 

This tiny, tiny picture of me is from third grade. I found it again in 2012, and then again for this project. This little wallet sized picture serves as a souvenir of my three-dimensional life, and captures it in a miniature version. I have no idea where this picture is now, but if I did have it I would probably give it to someone so that they could keep it with them.

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to poses both a specimen and a trophy." 

When this photo was being taken, I was taking my own photo of the Matanzas River Outlet. This photo captures the moment of my own souvenir, but Abby's souvenir as well. In this case, the photo of myself and my best friend Abby serves as the trophy, whereas the picture I am taking in photo is the specimen.

"The place of origin must remain unavailable in order for desire to be generated."

In this photo, I am participating in illegal activity by making some graffiti art on a wall. The origin of the wall is not known and does not have to be known to enjoy the aspect of the art. The desire in this photo is from the idea of crime, but also the mystery of the location the crime is being committed.

Discomfort memento, wood, metal, and leather, 4" x 4" x 5" This sculpture was made as a memento for the memory of telling my family about when I was sexually assaulted. The memory involves being in a hardware store in the lumber section, when out of sheer chance the conversation came up. The materials I used represent the setting of the memory as well as how I felt telling them about this part of my life. The leather straps are supposed to represent the restraint I felt by keeping the event unknown and inside of myself for so many years. The nails, however, are meant to represent the discomfort in explaining the situation to them. Spacial Blueprint

Let Me Out of the Kitchen, foam core, paper, glue, white spray paint, and black ink, 2.5' x 1' x 8" This spacial blueprint was created to represent one of my work spaces as a chef. I am in this small kitchen for at least eight hour intervals and am constantly making, plating, and running food. by making the sculpture into a circle, I am able to represent the hectic environment without having to illustrate it in detail. I carved the sphere of foam into the shapes of the appliances that I have in my kitchen. These include a dish washing station, a hot and a cold table, a flat top grill, and a press grill. I also included a hand reaching out of the enclosed space to represent myself in the small area.Though I like my job very much, there have been times where I felt like I was trapped in a cycle of making food. By using paper to wrap the vine like forms around the arm and on the appliances, I can even further illustrate the feeling of restraint. ...

Fluxus Box

Pulp Fiction Fluxus box, foam core, paper, glue, black, grey, and red paint, a mirror, a band aid, a toy car, fur, a wallet, flour, plastic wrap and a plastic bag, a trophy, a bible, a cigar, cotton, and red lipstick, 16" x 12" x 5" This project was inspired by the iconic movie Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. I chose this movie because it was one of the first "adult" movies that I was allowed to watch growing up, and because I love stories with action and violence. I made the box to resemble the suit case that Jules and Vincent are carrying for many scenes, except I designed it to not open like the traditional suitcase would. On the inside of the lid, I used a dirty gold piece of paper to represent the glowing light that comes out of the suitcase every time a character opens it. On top of that paper is a circular mirror with numbers out of order, meant to represent how the sequence of the movie is broken up and out of order...
