Memento

Discomfort memento, wood, metal, and leather, 4" x 4" x 5"

This sculpture was made as a memento for the memory of telling my family about when I was sexually assaulted. The memory involves being in a hardware store in the lumber section, when out of sheer chance the conversation came up. The materials I used represent the setting of the memory as well as how I felt telling them about this part of my life. The leather straps are supposed to represent the restraint I felt by keeping the event unknown and inside of myself for so many years. The nails, however, are meant to represent the discomfort in explaining the situation to them. By using a pyramid shape, I was able to create a form that had many chaotic lines, and also a neutral square.
